About Further Elimination of Attachments

A Dafa Disciple from Taiwan

PureInsight | September 17, 2001

Every time I go out, I always bring a pile of Dafa leaflets to give out. I expect to help people learn about Falun Dafa whenever I see somebody at a bus stop, walking or waiting at a traffic light. When I do this with compassion, most people will accept them. Occasionally, a few of them refuse them, but I take these things calmly with a smile.

I thought I was doing very well with giving out leaflets. But the minute you think you are not bad, a problem arises and you need to improve. One day I was walking with a fellow practioner giving out leaflets. She was always in front of me because she walked faster. There came a person on left hand side, she gave out one; there came another person on the right hand side, she gave out another.

It went that way several times. A thought started to form in my mind, “Why isn’t there anybody left for me?” I realised my selfishness instantly. I told myself that it was a good opportunity to see my selfishness. But, when she did it again, I could not bear it even though I had warned myself. I said vexatiously, “Every time I want to do it, you get there first…”

I knew I was wrong when I said those words. Later, she let me give out leaflets instead. With my impure heart, three passers by refused the leaflets by waving their hands. I regretted my attitude. Because I had not cultivated very well, both my fellow practitioner and the opportunity for others to obtain Fa in the future had been influenced. Walking home silently, I looked within myself.

When others accepted the leaflets, I should feel happy for them. How can I create an attachment from it? Teacher said in “Further Eliminatiion of Attachments” (Essentials for Further Advancement), “our practioners, including our staff, are jealous of each other even in their work for Dafa. Can you become a Buddha like this?”… “Dafa belongs to the entire universe, and not to any one insignificant individual. Whoever does the work is spreading Dafa. It is not important whether it is done by you or by others. Are you going to bring to a paradise this attachment that you can not let go of, and contend with Buddhas? Nobody should treat Dafa as his or her own exclusive thing. Eliminate that feeling of injustice in your mind! When your mind can not get over something, isn’t caused by your attachment?”

Dafa work is not the work of ordinary human beings. Whenever your heart is deviated and impure, it will allow the evil force to grow and affect the Fa rectification process. Teacher also said in “Further Understanding” (Essentials for Further Advancement), “As long as you are a cultivator, in any envionment or under any circumstances, I’ll use any troubles or unpleasant things you come across, even if they involve work for Dafa, or no matter how good or sacred you think they are, to eliminate your attachments and expose your demon-nature, so that it can be eliminated.” If we can keep our hearts pure, righteous and unselfish at all times, in all places, while giving out the light of completely eliminating evil as a Dafa particle, “what you do then, with a pure heart, will be the best and most sacred.” (“Further Understanding” in Essentials for Further Advancement).
At the same time, I dug out a deeply hidden attachment. I used to think I was not attached to Consummation. Even when I heard Teacher say, at the Washington, D.C. Conference, that the planned number of practitioners reaching consummation was at least fifty million, my heart did not waver. Not until this time, that is, when I found out that I was worried that I might give out fewer leaflets than others, which is actually the attachment of worrying about falling behind others and so losing out on Consummation.

Teacher said in “Eliminate your Last Attachment”, “it is in fact time to let go of your last attachment. As cultivators, you already know that you should, and in your actions you have, let go of all worldly attachments, including the attachment to the human body, and have made it through the process of letting go of life and death. Then is being attached to reaching Consummation an attachment? Isn’t it also an attachment born of human desire? Would a Buddha be attached to reaching Consummation? As a matter of fact, those cultivators who are truly approaching Consummation do not have this attachment.”

Teacher said, at the Washington, D.C. international conference, “you must be a Dafa disciple doing Dafa work, because your Consummation is primary importance. Right now, your Consummation is first and foremost. Of course, your being responsible to Dafa and saving sentient beings is part of your Consummation.”

I understand that the Consummation Teacher mentions here is “truly pure, righteous and unselfish, and Consummation through truly righteous Fa and enlightenment will never be destroyed”. In order to rectify Fa, Teacher has borne the bad karma for numerous beings from different levels and cosmic systems. Buddhas who have truly reached Consummation will sacrifice themselves for the truth of the cosmos and numerous sentient beings. This is truly pure, righteous and unselfish Consummation.

Finally, let’s encourage each other with Teacher’s words, “no matter what you do, you need to be worthy of being called a Dafa disciple… get rid of any attachment you might have, and don’t think about such things. Just do everything a Dafa disciple shoud do, and everything will be covered.” (“Lecture on the Fa” at Washington DC International Conference)

Let’s work even harder.
