Hong Kong, called the “Pearl of the East,” is long known for its prosperity and freedom. It is a haven for free trade and is rich in a culture of tolerance and assimilation. Nevertheless, it has lost its radiance recently through an act of atrocity, repressing democracy.

On March 14, Hong Kong police personnel violently arrested 16 Falun Gong practitioners who were holding a peaceful appeal in front of the Chinese government’s liaison office. Later, the police authorities accused the practitioners of “blocking traffic,” “attacking police” and other trumped-up charges. They ended up pressing charges against these practitioners in court.

We all know that right now, Falun Gong is suffering brutal persecution in Mainland China. In order to satisfy his personal desires and to solidify his powers, Jiang Zemin has used the entire national propaganda and economic apparatus to abolish justice and conscience and brutalize innocent citizens. He has orchestrated many bloody crimes and tried to frame Falun Gong for them. His edicts have also attempted to brainwash the whole population with his monopoly over the media. Under such desperate circumstances, Falun Gong practitioners in Changchun made use of a cable TV network and successfully played truth clarification videos, which exposed the Chinese ruling dictator’s lies that have been fooling people for the past few years. It shocked the world. Jiang issued the order to “kill them all without pardon.” As a result, practitioners in Changchun were arrested in great numbers. Right now, we hear that more than 5,000 practitioners have been arrested and more than 100 people were killed. The situation is extremely critical.

In order to stop this perpetration of abuse and murder and support Changchun practitioners, those 16 practitioners held a sit-in protest hunger strike in front of the Chinese government’s liaison office in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, the police authorities forcibly arrested them. The officers even committed perjury in court after the liaison office pressed charges against the practitioners. From violent arrests to frame-ups and slander, Hong Kong police personnel trampled human rights and laws. They deprived the practitioners of their right to peacefully protest and freely assemble, as is guaranteed under the “one country, two systems” arrangement. This was an incident of persecution of Falun Gong, and the police played a dubious role when choosing between upholding justice and morality, the greatest law, and submitting to the will of a bigger power, the Chinese government.

The world’s major news media and kind people are paying close attention to how the Hong Kong judicial system is going to treat these Falun Gong practitioners. This incident also exposed Jiang’s fear - Falun Gong is sticking in his craw, like a fishbone. This also exposed his perverted mentality of hurrying to destroy Falun Gong in Hong Kong, which is geographically so close to Mainland China. He further wants to reduce the Hong Kong government to a tool with absolute obedience to him, a tool he can use to suppress dissidents. It also shows that “one nation and two systems” is merely “a bait-like lie.”

Hong Kong people take pride in the fact that their region’s government is based on a system of law. Furthermore, in my thinking, laws should aim at protecting morality. Only when morality is good and people are good can true prosperity and autonomy happen. Right now, Hong Kong’s democracy, legal system, freedom of speech and assembly is facing an unprecedented, serious test. Regarding the incident of the good Falun Gong practitioners who merely insisted on cultivating Truth, Compassion, and Tolerance, they have lost their protection under the law. This is only because they asked for justice by holding an orderly, peaceful sitting protest, and were even sued in court. Isn’t this a great irony? Don’t these events in Hong Kong point to a loss of freedom and also of ignoring human rights?

In fact, if unreasonable persecution were not perpetrated against them, why would the practitioners have to ask for justice? Nothing happens without a reason. Up until now, the Chinese dictator has not only failed to eliminate Falun Gong, but, on the contrary, people have grown more and more sober. As the persecution escalates, Falun Gong has seen a lot more exposure and has spread even further. Jiang’s efforts to eradicate Falun Gong has actually had the opposite effect – with his actions he is helping Falun Gong to become more widely known and is helping the truth to be exposed. People without morals must receive punishment from heaven. People who choose to be kind must receive rewards. Hong Kong’s democracy and legal system should be kept intact and the Hong Kong people, police and government should also think about their responsibility regarding their own future.
