From Tears to Seeking the Book: The Choice Young Audience Members Make After Watching Shen Yun

An Overseas Dafa Disciple

[PureInsight.org] During the Shen Yun Performing Arts performances in Baltimore, I was helping to sell souvenirs, and two groups of young audience members deeply moved me.

The first was a young Black woman. She came excitedly to the Shen Yun merchandise booth and said she wanted to look at the other souvenirs, but first she needed to see that book. She said that while watching the performance, she had cried more than once. She felt she had to see the book held by the Falun Gong practitioners and understand why it was so special—why, despite such persecution and suppression, they still refused to give up and continued their practice.

I told her that the English version of Zhuan Falun was blue rather than yellow, and I showed it to her. To make it easier for her to understand, I explained that Zhuan Falun is like the Bible for Falun Gong practitioners—a book they read every day, while striving to guide their daily lives, studies, and work according to the principles of “Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance.” She immediately said that she also needed to guide herself by “Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance.” I replied, “These three words sound simple, but truly putting them into practice in our everyday actions is not easy.” She agreed, bought the book, and said she would first read it and then genuinely try to live by it.

The second group was a young white couple. They walked straight up to the Shen Yun merchandise booth and said they were looking for the book shown on stage. I explained that the yellow book they had seen was blue in English and pointed to it, saying, “It’s right here.” At that moment, another practitioner asked whether they would like to look at other souvenirs as well. The young man replied, “No, we don’t need any other souvenirs. We’re only looking for this book.” He picked up the book and began flipping through it. I asked whether he had ever heard of Falun Dafa before. He said he had not, but after seeing the performance, he very much wanted to learn more. He asked what the book talked about and how many chapters it had.

I said, “On the surface, you could understand it as a book that teaches people how to become better individuals by following the principles of ‘Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance.’ But as a scripture with nine lectures that guides Falun Gong practitioners in cultivation, it also contains deeper meanings. You could say it addresses why we came here, where we are going, and what standards we need to meet in order to return to our original place of origin. You really have to read it carefully yourself to understand what kind of book it is.”

Both of them said this was exactly the book they had been searching for, and they happily bought it. I used to feel that young people nowadays were too restless and distracted to care about self-cultivation or becoming better people. But these two groups of young people made me feel that our society still has hope, and that all of our efforts are meaningful.
