A Story about "Names"

A Dafa Practitioner

During my first six months as a practitioner in 1995, my mind was tested almost every day. Although I experienced many ups and downs, I could feel that my mind and body were becoming stronger.

One day, my elementary school aged son came home in high spirits, and told us that his English teacher had given everyone in his class English names. His English name was "David.' On hearing this, I said to myself: 'That is my English name'. During that time period, I often went abroad and used this name for myself. But more importantly, I knew that in China, nobody would name their son the same as the father. Therefore, I told him, "That is my English name. Go to your teacher and ask him to change your name.' But his contention was that all his classmates had already started using that name. I lost my temper and made my son unhappy too.

While I was still feeling upset by this matter, a practitioner whose heavenly eyes were opened, and who seldom went out of his home, suddenly came to my office and told me a story of something he had experienced: For some time, whenever he started to embrace the wheel (one of the positions in the Falun Standing Stance Exercise), his main consciousness would go to heaven. Our Master showed him many heavenly kingdoms in the Milky Way. He once even played on the back of the cow of Laozi (the founder of the Tao school). In those kingdoms, he met with a female practitioner from Guangzhou many times. She told him her name, and where she worked. Because I was one of the volunteer supervisors of this Dafa instruction center, he asked me to verify whether she was a real person. Later, it was verified that this company really had this person who practiced at home by herself. She had supernormal abilities. This matter made a strong impression on me at that time. He then told me that recently, Master had showed him around in the Falun paradise. Because the Falun paradise is so magnificent and mysterious it took him three consecutive visits to see the whole world. According to his estimation, one corner of the WanZi (swastika) symbol located at the center is many times larger than the Milky Way. With his limited words, he did his best to describe how magnificent and mysterious the world was. He also mentioned that every time he went up there, Master would send two incomparably solemn, enlightened beings who looked like they were approximately 17 or 18 years old, to show him around. Master also answered his questions through soundless telepathy. At the end of the third visit, he somehow realized that he might not come back again soon, and he wanted to express his gratitude and say goodbye to the two enlightened people. However, though he had been there three times, he had never been given their names. So he asked, "What are your family names? What are your given names?" The two enlightened people smiled and answered, "In this world, there are no family names and given names. Names are a human world thing. As soon as a person is born, a name will be given to the person'. On hearing this, he understood immediately. He pressed the hands together on his chest (Heshi) and said farewell.

After telling me this story, the veteran practitioner left. But his story made me think about what I had done. I felt guilty. I had made it difficult for my son because of an English name. The differences between an ordinary person and an enlightened one are obvious everywhere. When I decided to apologize to my son, I felt the happiness of cultivation, the greatness of Fa and our Master's ubiquitous mercy.
