Holding a Substitute Class - Talking Western Literature

A Dafa Disciple from Taiwan

PureInsight | January 28, 2002

A disciple who teaches in a university wanted to attend hongfa activities overseas during a semester break. However, there was one class during that period of time that could not be shifted to an earlier date or postponed. Just when she was caught in this difficult situation, a righteous thought emerged. "If I could find a Dafa disciple to take over the class, not only will I be able to attend hongfa activities overseas but the students will also have an opportunity to get to know about Dafa." Consequently, the few lessons on "Western Literature" were magically assigned to two disciples, including myself, who had studied the natural sciences. From cultivation in the Dafa, we understand that literature is also created by the Fa at this level of the human world as is science. From the standpoint of the Fa, Dafa disciples should be able to talk about anything regarding everyday people's knowledge. When my righteous thoughts emerged, the concept of "literature" appeared clearly in my mind as I accepted the assignment. After all, everyday people's literature is just literary works that describe life, containing thoughts, emotions and imagination using words. Therefore, the core of literature lies in "human beings". In fact, weren't the great writers in history simply putting their feelings into writing when faced with illusory, helpless, and constantly changing lives? The reason for the popularity of literary works like "A Dream of Red Mansions", or Shakespeare's plays is that these works are imbued with inner meanings. Authors have brought their understanding of the meaning of life into the creation of their literary works. All the more we should let students who study literature realize that literature is not about writing skills. Only by deeply appreciating the meaning of life can one write touching literary works.

With such insights, everything becomes simple. It does not matter what form is adopted as long as the meaning of the Fa is brought into these lessons, as it is by itself a magnificent piece of literary work. We chose an article from PureInsight Net as a pre-class reading assignment. At the beginning of the class, we arranged to screen a small segment of the movie "The Green Mile" to illustrate the issue of the transformation of karma. Surprisingly, a small number of students voiced deep hatred towards Dafa. I told myself calmly that only the strength of compassion can resolve hatred. My only previous experience in the university was as a student, and I had no idea how to give a lecture to university students. I did not think about what I was going to say before going up to the podium. I simply went up and started to talk about human supernormal capabilities, the existence of other dimensions, virtue and karma. I used the movie plot as a starting point, telling them "good will be rewarded with good, bad will be met with bad". Another fellow practitioner explained about human supernormal capabilities citing, his own inborn supernormal capability as an example. Unknowingly, we had brought to light a side of life which is not familiar to everyday people.

Time flew by. In the process of discussions on the truth of the cosmos, those students whose faces were hostile and impatient in the beginning gradually gave up their notions and started to smile and even joined in the discussions. At that instant, I had a new understanding towards hongfa and clarifying the truth. When our minds become purer, the power that comes from the Fa pushes one forward and is beyond imagination. The wisdom that emerges does not come from careful consideration. The skills required in clarifying the truth come naturally and at will. This is the case with cultivation, and it is the same with literature. When one assimilates to the characteristics of the universe, what gets manifested is wisdom.

Once during a conference on the exchange of pure insights, I remember one fellow practitioner saying, "There is no truth that cannot be clarified. When we feel we can not clarify something, that is because we have not cultivated ourselves well enough." I was deeply touched by these words. Therefore, I realized further that hongfa and clarifying the truth are the touchstones of cultivation, specially tailored for Fa-rectification disciples. In this most evil period, it demonstrates the magnificence of Dafa and Dafa disciples even more. In the process of gradually assimilating to the Fa, Dafa disciples temper themselves through trials and tribulations and in this way create the most magnificent enlightened beings.

When I wrote down this experience, I suddenly realized that this disciple's righteous thought has already spurred a group of beings to walk on the right path. Fa-rectification disciples' every action and every word are all remarkable pieces of literary work that touch lives universally. Isn't that so? Expressing it in human language is the only obstacle.
