The Toronto Future Science Forum

The first Future Science Forum in Canada was held at the University of Toronto. Sponsored by Pure Insight and The International Institute of Future Science and Culture, this was the third Future Science conference after the first ever, which was held at Cambridge University in March, 2002.

Toronto’s Future Science Forum centered on scientific research related to Falun Gong cultivation. Presentations aimed at showing evidence that the quick spread of Falun Gong is not attributable simply to social phenomena and that Falun Gong cultivation is linked to improvement of human health and well being.

Dr. Lili Feng proposed that although stress causes disease and aging, 'inner peace is the stress vaccine.' She showed that in samples of cells taken from practitioners of Falun Gong, the metabolic rate of protein production is slower and hence, the life span of cells is prolonged beyond the life span of cells from non-practitioners. Her research with samples of cells from Falun Gong practitioners also showed that bacteria are killed faster by practitioners’ than non-practitioners’ cells, providing evidence for increased immunity in Falun Gong practitioners. In the cases studied, practitioners benefited from enhanced immunity but avoided the negative effects of spontaneous cell death that nonpractitioners encounter when their immunity is heightened.

Dr. Mai He presented statistics from a massive survey carried out in 1996 on over 35,000 Falun Gong practitioners living in Beijing and Guangdong Province in China. The results of the survey showed cure rates of as high as 77% for ailments such as cancer, which are usually considered incurable by Western medicine. In the survey, there were many cases of post menopausal women who regained their menstrual cycles, the oldest case being a 88 year old residing in Guangdong Province. The overall rate of self-reported health improvement from Falun Gong practitioners was approximately 85 percent within the first year of practice and over 95 percent for those practicing for 4 years or more. Dr. He also discussed how Western medicine is treatment specific, focusing directly on the biological cause for the illness and requires no belief. Qigong, on the other hand is a modern version of ancient self-improvement systems that are capable of curing diseases.

An in-depth discussion of principles of ancient Chinese medicine was presented by medical doctor Nevin Hu. In his talk, Dr. Hu pointed out that, from the current standpoint of Western medicine, it is acceptable to suffer from disease, while from the perspective of ancient Chinese medicine, the person should not get sick at all. People living in ancient China prepared medicine only for emergencies yet, as the moral standard began to decrease, the six bad qi such as Wind, Fire and Cold began to penetrate the body. As a result people began to get sick and taking medicine to fight bacteria became a commonly accepted phenomenon because of the decline in morality. Because morality is low in today's society, disease and illness are everywhere. Dr. Nevin discussed an example of how ancient Chinese medicine could easily cure a complex neurological problem and how ancient Chinese doctors were able to diagnose a person with simple sensory organs such as their hands, eyes and listening to the sounds a person makes. He also mentioned that famous ancient Chinese doctors were all cultivators.

The speakers presented their work in a general and illustrative form so that it was comprehensible to people from diverse scientific backgrounds or those who were simply interested in science as related to Falun Gong cultivation. The Forum finished successfully with many people in the audience raising questions for the speakers to address.
