Reflections on Cultivation: What’s in a Twitch?

A Dafa Disciple

[PureInsight.org] When I was a kid, I formed a notion that “When your eyelids twitch, it means something bad or good is going to happen.” This notion still influenced me even after I practiced Falun Dafa. From the Fa principles, I understood that cultivators wouldn’t be restricted by the laws governing ordinary people; so even if this notion happened to be true for human beings, I understood that this “eyelids twitching” wouldn’t affect cultivators. However, it was really hard to get rid of this notion!

Recently it happened again – my right eyelid started twitching like mad. I tried hard to reject the notion in my mind, but I found from the bottom of my heart I still believed it. Something bad already happened. I was afraid that more bad things were coming. In fact, it already exposed my human attachment. I was seeking an easy life in the ordinary world, with no suffering and no trouble! Just like Master said in Zhuan Falun: “It is different from ordinary people. What everyday people want is personal gain and how to live well and comfortably. Our practitioners are not this way, but exactly the opposite. We do not seek what everyday people want. Instead, what we get is something everyday people cannot obtain—even though they want to—except through cultivation practice.”

At first, I didn’t pay much attention to the attachment. Then one day I suddenly realized that it was an obstinate notion, and wondered, “Why is this notion so deeply rooted?” I thought about my other attachments. Sometimes it seemed I got rid of them completely. However, inadvertently they would jump back up in my mind and even control my thoughts. Human notions are really that deeply rooted. Every day when we think, talk and do something, how many of our thoughts really meet the requirements of Dafa? I am afraid that many of my thoughts are actually controlled by postnatally-acquired notions, attachments, or external elements. All those notions and attachments that influence me badly are just as obstinate as the notion of “eyelids twitching.” On the other hand, cultivation is really about finding those notions and rectifying ourselves according to Dafa. I find that whenever I have righteous thoughts and see clearly my notions and attachments, I feel my body is very light. When my mind is not clear, I can’t tell whether a thought is truly from me or from a notion. Now, I understand that true improvement during cultivation is the improvement of one’s mind – changing our notions and abandoning our attachments. The surface form is nothing. The only way out of these deluded states is to abandon the attachment from the bottom of the heart.

From the Fa, we all know that different levels and different dimensions have different standards of Fa. Any thought or action that is deviated from the standard must be corrected. We can see or enlighten to the standard at some new level from the Fa. Then, we can use the new standard to measure everything, to distinguish the notions, emotions and attachments, and to repel and reject them (this one is very important). If at every moment we regard ourselves as Dafa practitioners and position ourselves well, then the power of Fa will manifest in us!
