Cultivation Insights: Waiting – A Grain of Sand

A Dafa Practitioner outside of China

PureInsight | November 17, 2008

[PureInsight.org] I would like to share an experience that several other practitioners and I had when promoting the Divine Performing Arts’ Chinese Spectacular to theater patrons.

We arrived at the theater a little bit early, and since the intermission had not started, there were not many people outside. I noticed that posted on the wall there were many advertisements promoting other shows. I couldn’t help thinking how wonderful it would be if people all came to see our show because it is truly the most divine performance in the world.

Soon, some people began to walk out of the theater and we began to introduce them to our show. Because we dressed formally and smiled, we mostly got good responses from people. Some people showed interest, while others did not. As more and more people began coming out of the theatre, we found that there were many people that we could not give flyers to. We didn’t know what to do. All we could do was remain calm and send forth the righteous thought that they should not miss this show, as they had been waiting such a long time to see it.

Later, we also realized that not just ordinary people had been waiting for such a long time, but so had we! Just like other Dafa activities, what we were doing was helping these people to find their karmic relationship with Dafa. In order to achieve this, we needed to be in the best cultivation state, and this would show in our behavior and expression. In doing this, we can give sentient beings the best chance to establish their relationship with the Fa as soon as possible.

On the way back home, I realized that I was just like a grain of sand in Dafa. What we did was only meaningful if it met the requirements of the Fa. I remembered that Master said in Zhuan Falun, “Sakyamuni said that at the microscopic level, a grain of sand contains three thousand worlds” (Lecture 8, “Heavenly Ciruit”). Although I am only a grain of sand, my responsibilities are enormous and I need to walk my own path well.

Upon looking back, I realize that I have had no idea about how to do some specific things. It was definitely not good just to follow ordinary people’s methods, and I knew I needed to do things according to Dafa’s requirements. However, due to my own attachments and some thoughts of considering ordinary people’s ways better than my own understandings from the Fa, I was not very harmonious. I always blamed myself for lacking social skills and thus tried to learn from ordinary people. Now when I look back, I see that in this situation there was a factor of cultivation. It is okay to take a reference from the way ordinary people deal with problems, but the purpose is not to follow it completely but use it as a reference.

As I continually read Zhuan Falun, I understand more and more principles at different levels. The Fa includes everything, and the more we study Fa, the more able we are to walk our own path well. It allows us to keep calm, not go to extremes, and think only about Fa and how to validate the Fa well in order to save more sentient beings. In the meantime, we need to get rid of those factors that do not conform to the Fa in order to ensure that sentient beings have the best possible chance of being saved.
