Homeopathic First Aid: Arnica

Arnica montana is the most important homeopathic remedy for the treatment of trauma--especially blunt trauma and its ill effects.

Arnica looks like a yellow daisy, except that some of its petals are twisted and bent. It almost looks like it had an accident. Arnica,
which grows in the Alps, is used in a herbal tonic there. If people
fall while climbing in the mountains, they are given a dose of Arnica tonic.

After its introduction into homeopathy, specially prepared doses
enhanced its effects considerably; it acts more quickly and profoundly
than when used as a tonic.

Some surgeons give Arnica before and after operations to reduce the shock to the system and reduce bruising.

One of my patients was going to have a rhinoplasty (nose operation).
Those who have seen people right after this operation notice the
typically black-and-blue circles around the eyes, due to the blood that
has drained during and after the operation. I suggested that this
patient take Arnica before
and after the operation. The day following surgery, her surgeon took
one look and noticed her face had no discoloration. He then returned
with a retinue of nurses to show them the results of great surgery!

A family friend was in a car accident more than a month ago. She was
still shaken by the accident, and very apprehensive about driving.
After one dose of Arnica, she was driving again as if nothing had happened.

One of the common characteristics that patients have when they are in a
state of shock follow an injury is: "I'm fine. Nothing is wrong." They
usually say this as they are backing away from you (if they can walk).
There are two reasons for this reaction. In a state of shock, a person
may have a serious injury yet experience no pain. Another reason is
that in a state of shock, the person does not want to be touched.
Following a dose of Arnica, however, the person indeed feels the pain of the injury, but the state of shock is gone.

A child fell down the stairs and cut his lower lip and bruised his
gums. He was in a panicked and inconsolable state. Following the
appropriate dose of Arnica, although he felt the pain of the injury, the panic and emotional distress were gone.
