A Brief Discussion on Buddha Fa Cultivation from the Perspective of Light

A Dafa Disciple

PureInsight | March 21, 2002

I graduated from the Computer Science Department of Tsinghua University in 1993 and am currently a network engineer. I have been practicing Falun Dafa for four years. Practicing cultivation has tremendously changed both my body and mind. When I was in college I was known as a sickly person, and often took medicine and visited hospitals. Now I am very healthy, and feel that my body is light and very energetic. The cultivation of my xinxing [mind/heart nature, moral character] has made my heart more compassionate, clean and pure. I found that as a Falun Dafa practitioner, I am among the happiest people in the world.

The principles of Falun Dafa are the most convincing. I have been thinking and asking questions ever since my childhood. But my parents' responses often could not answer my questions. After I grew up, I had more questions, such as "How large is the universe? Why does everything in the world take its current form? Why do human beings suffer? Is existence eternal?" None of the scientists, philosophers or other scholars have been able to answer these questions. Many people have become accustomed to this and believe that such questions are not worth considering. When I had the chance to listen to lectures of Mr. Li Hongzhi, I found that he cleared up all of my confusion and clearly explained everything about the universe. Falun Dafa gave me a brand new outlook and made it possible for me to look at the world and my life from a broader scope. The Buddha Law gives us a broader understanding of the universe than modern science.

The following is my understanding of cultivation from the point of view of modern science. Generally, people say, "Seeing is believing." If they cannot see something, they don't believe it exists. Actually, when people see something through their eyes, visible light hits the retina. In physics, light is a kind of electromagnetic wave and the wavelength of visible light is from 4000 Å to 7600 Å (1 Å is 10-10 of a meter). We see different colors in visible light because its wavelength varies. Color blindness occurs when people cannot distinguish wavelengths of visible light. Electromagnetic waves not only include visible light, but also radio waves, infrared rays, ultraviolet rays, X-rays, gamma rays, etc. The longest wavelength is up to 100,000 meters, while the shortest wavelength is only 10-17 meter. The electromagnetic wave spectrum is so wide that visible light only covers a tiny portion of it. Any light with a wavelength that is outside this area is invisible to humans. Compared to the whole electromagnetic wave spectrum, the vision of human beings is very limited.

The human vision can be extended by using instruments to sense light that is invisible to human eyes. A lot of work has been done in this area. For example, some cosmic bodies emit ultraviolet rays instead of visible light. Scientists can observe those heavenly bodies via special telescopes that detect ultraviolet rays. The famous Hubble telescope provided a great amount of material for cosmographical research. Pictures of many galaxies are available on the NASA website.

Microcosmically, the diameter of an atomic nucleus is only 1/108 of the wavelength of visible light. In order to observe small particles like this we need light whose wavelength is of the same magnitude as the diameter of the nucleus. Human eyes are composed of molecules. Therefore, the light whose wavelength is of the same magnitude as the diameter of the nucleus will not only pass through the gap between the molecules composing our eyes, but also the molecules themselves. There is no way we see can see particles of the same size as the nucleus, unless we have eyes that are composed of atoms. Objects made of molecules look compact to us. But they are just like window screens. Smaller particles such as nuclei can easily pass through them. It is just like wind passing through a window screen. We can neither see nor feel it. Compared to our dimension made of molecules it is a completely independent system and exists simultaneously in the same place. Scientists are continuously investigating the existence of multiple dimensions. The level of nuclei has its independent form of existence and light. Isn't it a dimension?

As a matter of fact, some scientists have learned that every known particle level - and some unknown smaller particle levels - were each independent dimensions. There are so many spaces that are invisible to human beings and that exist simultaneously in the same place. How can we say that invisible things do not exist?

However, during the course of making breakthroughs towards dimensions made of smaller and smaller particles, scientists found that the smaller the particles, the higher the energy, the more stable the structure and the more difficult the journey to explore the deeper dimensions. Modern science's method of researching microcosmic particles is to bombard the particle with accelerated particles and split it into smaller pieces in order to study its structure. The diameter of the first cyclotron that Lawrence invented in 1930 was only 10 cm, and it could already split a nucleus into neutrons and protons. Modern accelerators are as long as several kilometers, but still cannot split nuclei into quarks. Scientists are building longer accelerators, but the prospects for creating smaller particles are dim. We can only detect some smaller particles that are released during the destruction of the weakest structures at that smaller particle's level when high-speed particles bombard another particle. Since dimensions have independent forms of existence, different particle levels must have numerous kinds of particles that are in disorder, just as we have molecules that are in disorder in our dimension. Therefore, there must be many different kinds of stable particles that we cannot reach. Scientists know so little about other dimensions and yet they try to describe them like one who uses a shell from the seashore to describe the sea. Particles used in advanced physics experiments were accelerated to almost the speed of light in order to obtain these barely-known particles. Therefore, our methods for exploring deeper dimensions are obviously limited.

When we look at human beings from the perspective of a greater cosmic body, we can see that our lives are very insignificant, delicate and transient. On the macro scale, we cannot get out of the Milky Way galaxy even if we fly at the speed of light. On the micro scale, huge gaps between energy levels prevent us from exploring the deeper dimensions. The scope of human activities is limited by the speed of light, time, space and gaps between energy levels. Human beings confined to the solar system can neither fully understand the universe and nor the most microcosmic origin of matter.

So what should entrapped human beings do?

If the universe can generate lives, then the existence of lives should not be limited to our dimension. Beings in those dimensions with higher energy levels must be more advanced forms of life. If one wants to break through the restrictions of the universe and understand higher dimensions, one needs to ascend to a more advanced form of existence. This can be accomplished by cultivating the Buddha Fa.

The gong generated on the body of a cultivator is a very microscopic, high-energy substance. Eyes made up of this kind of gong obtained through cultivation [known as Celestial eyes] can see different dimensions that are composed of different lives and substances. The different levels of eyesight are referred to as the Flesh Eyesight, Celestial Eyesight, Wisdom Eyesight, Fa Eyesight and Buddha Eyesight. The Flesh Eyesight can see our dimension. The Celestial Eyesight can pierce through this dimension. The Wisdom Eyesight and higher levels of eyesight can see other dimensions. Eyes made of particles of different levels can see light of corresponding wavelengths and dimensions.

Master Li's book, Zhuan Falun, systematically expounds the cultivation of Buddhahood. In this book Master Li discloses for the first time in history the origin and real meaning of human life. It reveals the existence of the universal principle of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance and its restriction on life. It also explained how to upgrade one's xinxing [mindheart nature, moral quality], and describes the cultivation process of returning to higher dimensions. If anyone in the audience hasn't read Zhuan Falun, I suggest you take a look at this book. To better understand it, read the book from cover to cover.

From the scientific perspective, the contents of Zhuan Falun include the principles of the universe, the origin of human beings, time and space, energy and particles and the unity of mind and matter. Zhuan Falun elucidates the most fundamental and significant problems in science. If exploring time and space and investigating the mystery of the cosmos and life are the goals of science, then Falun Dafa is the true science.

One's cultivation level is the sole criterion to examine the truth. The higher the level, the closer to the fundamental truth of the universe, Zhen-Shan-Ren [Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance]. The cultivation practices of many Falun Dafa practitioners validates the scientific features of Falun Dafa and its remarkable effects on health and morality. Human beings will create a brand new civilization following the highest principle of the Buddha Fa, Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.
